Medieval Millefleurs Throw
The Hunt of the Unicorn tapestries (South Netherlandish, 1495–1505) on display at The Cloisters are among the most celebrated medieval works in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection. Luxuriously woven in fine wool and silk with silver and gilded threads, the seven hangings vividly depict scenes associated with a hunt for an elusive, magical unicorn. This exuberant throw shows details adapted from the Unicorn in Captivity, which is set against a millefleurs background: a field of dark green covered with blossoming trees and flowers. More than 80 of the plant species represented in the tapestries have been identified.
