In the early 16th century, Iran was united under the rule of the Safavid dynasty (1501-1722), one of the greatest dynasties to emerge from Iran in the Islamic period. The Safavids actively supported the arts of the book, and manuscripts from the period are noted for their high-quality calligraphies, illuminations, painting,s and bindings. A splendid 16th-century manuscript of the Khamsa (Five Tales) by the Persian poet Nizami is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection.
