Enthralled with the rich colors of the night and the effect of both natural and artificial light on the nocturnal landscape, Van Gogh realised Starry Night over the Rhone in 1888, just steps away from the Yellow House on the Place Lamartine.

This serene view from the banks of the Rhone River features a rich palette of blue: Prussian blue, ultramarine and cobalt. The city gas lights glimmer an intense orange and are reflected in the water while luminous stars twinkle against a velvety night sky. Two lovers blithely stroll along the river in the foreground.
